Vincentian Priests and Brothers

Northern city of Sopot was another stage of Superior’s General tour of Poland. In the evening, November 3, the honorable Guest arrived to the parish of the Pentecost in Sopot, another Vincentian community in the Province. All confrères from the parish, the retreat house in Gdynia and diocesan major seminary welcomed him cordially and had the evening meal. Meanwhile, Archbishop Tadeusz Gocłowski CM, retired Metropolitan of Gdansk joined the community. For him this meeting was a unique opportunity to celebrate this special moment in the community.

The meeting was held in the community hall in the house in the atmosphere of fraternal joy and dialog. Superior General shared his experience and impressions from numerous visits and travels to the places where Vincentians and Daughters of Charity. One more event took place during the meeting - this was the day of patron saint of Fr. Karol Holubicki CM, spiritual director in the Gdansk Major Seminary. On this occasion he received warm name-day greetings. The meeting finished very late. Father General stayed in Sopot overnight.

Part of next day gave Superior General the opportunity to became a tourist for a while. After visiting the parish church and concelebrating the Eucharist in the morning he moved for sightseeing accompanied by Fr. Jerzy Berdychowski CM, the Superior and chartered guide. Despite strong wind and very unfavorable weather they had a walk on the famous pier in Sopot, the largest wooden construction in Europe of this kind, and very picturesque town attraction. Next, they visited the cathedral in Gdansk-Oliwa and went to see the legendary Gdansk Shipyard and the so called Three Crosses Monument honoring fallen workers of 1970. Finally they went do Gdansk and its Old Town starting from the old port. They walked along historic Long Lane (ul. Długa) and Long Market (Długi Targ). The tour ended in the St. Mary’s Church, the largerst brick church in the world and one of the largest Brick Gothic buildings in Europe.

After lunch, Superior General and his companions, Fr. Arkadiusz, the Visitor, and Fr. Adam, Provincal Secretary left seaside and headed to Warsaw where he already was expected in the Holy Cross House. This visit will be covered in another story.
