The oldest priest in the Province of New England died

On Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in St. Joseph’s Residence, Enfield, Connecticut, died Rev. Edward P. Gicewicz C.M., Ed.D, retired USAF chaplain, the oldest priest of Province of New England of the Congregation of the Mission. He died in the age of 96 and in 71 years of priesthood.

Rev. Gicewicz was born on January 28, 1913 in Bellows Falls, Vermont. He was received to the Congregation of the Mission in then Polish Vice-Province of New England on October 18, 1933 and completed formation and theological studies in Vincentian houses in Vilnius and Krakow (Province of Poland). Ordained priest on September 11, 1938.

A Vigil Service for Father Gicewicz will be held in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Residence, 1365 Enfield Street, Enfield, Connecticut, on Friday, March 20, at 7:00 pm (EST).  The Funeral Mass with Military Honors will be celebrated in the same chapel on Saturday, March 21, at 10:30 am (EST). Burial will be in the Vincentian Community Plot at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Derby, Connecticut. According to tradition all services will be presided by youngest member of the Province – Fr. Luke Sorys CM, and the Very Rev. Rafael Kopystynski CM, Provincial  of New England will be the preacher.
